Indiana State PTA Elects New Officers at 95 th Annual Convention
Indianapolis… The offices of President Elect, Northeast Region Vice President and Southern Region Vice President were voted on and officers installed during the annual State PTA Convention on April 22 at the Indianapolis Marriott East Hotel, 7202 East 21 st .
The new officers are Fort Wayne resident Connie Trowbridge (President Elect), Evansville resident Natalie Jones (Southern Region Vice President) and Fort Wayne resident Debbie Fox (Northeast Vice President).
Indianapolis resident Sonja Canterbury was installed as President. Each is a long-time PTA volunteer and has made a two-year commitment to serve as a state officer.
More than 300 delegates and guests attended the State PTA Convention, held from April 20 through 22. The convention, with the theme “Building a Brighter Future for our Children,” offered a wealth of child and youth information and ideas for parents, caregivers, teachers, administrators, and others interested in the welfare of children. Indiana State PTA Recognizes Outstanding Teacher and Principal at
95 th Annual Convention
Indianapolis… Parents, teachers, and others who make children a priority came together during the annual Indiana State PTA convention, honoring several individuals and PTAs during a celebration dinner at the Marriott East on Sunday.
Louise Swihart from Lakeside Middle School (Fort Wayne) was recognized as Outstanding Teacher, while Charles Deford of Northside High School (Fort Wayne) was named Outstanding Principal.
“These individuals were nominated by their peers,” said Dee Jones, outgoing State PTA president. “It's truly an honor to be recognized as the best statewide,” she added.
In addition, Indiana PTA honored Northrop High School PTA (Fort Wayne) as the outstanding PTA unit and Fort Wayne Area PTA Council as outstanding council. Tina Hartman serves as the local unit's president; Rose Hillery is the Fort Wayne Council president.

Indiana State PTA Recognizes Outstanding Local and Council Unit
at 95 th Annual Convention
Indianapolis…. Northrop High School PTA (Fort Wayne) was honored as the outstanding PTA unit and Fort Wayne Area PTA Council as outstanding council during the 95 th annual state PTA convention on April 22. Tina Hartman serves as the local unit's president; Rose Hillery is the Fort Wayne Council president.
“Northrop and Fort Wayne Council won awards because of their commitment to nurturing the relationships and partnerships between home, school, and community. The members and officers truly care about children and work together to create a variety of programs to address their needs,” said Dee Jones, Indiana State PTA president.

Indiana State PTA Welcomes Delegates and Guests to Annual Convention
Indianapolis…. The public is welcome to attend the Indiana State Parent Teacher Association (PTA) as they host their annual convention on April 20 through 22 at the Indianapolis Marriott East Hotel, 7202 East 21 st . The convention's theme is “Building a Brighter Future for our Children.”
“Whether you belong to the PTA or not, there are a number of workshops and speakers that will be helpful to anyone who is involved on any level with children,” said Dee Jones, state president. “Our committee has made a real effort to plan activities that will help parents and caregivers focus on the needs of children,” she added.
Convention activities begin on Friday, April 20 at 3 p.m. and culminate with a celebration and awards luncheon on Sunday. Student-created, award-winning art and writing will be displayed on Friday and Saturday (April 20 and 21). National PTA President-elect Jan Harp Domene will attend the convention and serve as keynote speaker. A number of fundraising and youth/school vendors will host booths from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 21.
The PTA will also conduct a number of business meetings. Registered convention attendees may go to these sessions, but only elected delegates will be allowed to vote.

Indiana State PTA Announces Citizenship Contest Winners
Indianapolis… Winners of the statewide Indiana State PTA Citizenship Essay Contest have been announced and their work displayed at the PTA annual convention on April 20 and 21 at the Indianapolis Marriott East Hotel, 7202 East 21 st .
The contest theme, “I love being an American because…” lent itself to a wide variety of interpretations. Students in grades fourth grade through high school were eligible to enter the contest through their local PTAs.
Volunteer teams of impartial judges reviewed essays submitted to local PTAs and those that best captured the spirit of the theme sent to the state committee for review. Entries were submitted from throughout the state, with each school allowed to send two entries per grade level for state competition.
Students were invited to propose theme ideas for the 2007-2008 contest. The winning theme, “What makes America the beautiful?,” was submitted by Heidi Schneemann from Robert C. Harris Elementary (Ft. Wayne).
The State PTA named Lowell Elementary PTA (Indianapolis) its 2007 PTA Unit Citizenship Award winner. Kelly Wyatt serves as president and Denise Keevern is Citizenship chair.

Indiana State PTA Announces Reflections Contest Winners
Indianapolis… Winners of the statewide Indiana State PTA Reflections Contest for visual arts have been announced with the artists to be recognized during a celebration luncheon on April 21 at the Indianapolis Marriott East Hotel, 7202 East 21 st .
The contest theme, “My Favorite Place…” was interpreted in a variety of media, including photography, pen and ink, watercolor, and collage. “The contest is a great way to enhance existing art programs and encourage young artists,” said Dee Jones, president, Indiana State PTA.
Students in grades Kindergarten through high school were eligible to enter the contest through their local PTA units. Categories were visual arts, literature, photography, dance, choreography, film/video production and musical composition.
Volunteer teams of impartial judges reviewed entries submitted to local PTAs and those that best captured the spirit of the theme sent to the state committee for review. There were more than 4,000 entries submitted statewide, with approximately 475 submitted to the state PTA for judging. Entries winning at the state level will be submitted to the national PTA competition. Each school is allowed to send two entries per grade level for state competition.

The National PTA Reflections Program was begun in 1969. Ten million plus students throughout the country have participated since its creation. Founded in 1897, the National PTA encourages its more than 6.5 million members to be involved in key child education and welfare issues.
